Trezor Start — Secure setup and first steps

This page shows the recommended, security-first steps to initialize a Trezor hardware wallet, verify device firmware, create and protect your recovery seed, and connect to trusted wallets and apps.

Before you start

Unbox only what you received from an authorized seller. Do not use used or tampered devices. Have a pen and the included recovery card ready — writing the recovery seed offline is the safest option.

Verify firmware

Quick setup checklist

1 — Unbox and inspect

Confirm the package seal and serial sticker are intact. If anything looks tampered with, do not proceed and contact support.

2 — Verify firmware

Always verify the firmware signature using Trezor Suite (desktop) or the official verification tool before initializing the device.

3 — Initialize and create seed

Initialize on-device and create a new recovery seed. Write your recovery seed down on the supplied card and store it offline in a secure place.

4 — Install Trezor Suite / compatible wallets

Use Trezor Suite or audited third-party wallets (e.g., Electrum, Exodus, MetaMask with hardware support) to manage accounts and sign transactions.

Detailed setup: initialize & secure

Step A — Connect & verify: Connect your device using the provided cable. Open the official Trezor Suite app or the official web start tool. The device screen shows the firmware fingerprint; confirm it matches the app’s verification result.

Step B — Create a PIN: Choose a strong numeric PIN using the device — PIN entry happens on the device for maximum security. Never disclose your PIN.

Step C — Generate your recovery seed: Follow the on-device prompts to generate a 12/24-word recovery seed. Write every word exactly as shown on the provided recovery card and verify carefully. Store the card in a secure, offline location (consider a bank safe or safety deposit box).

Step D — Firmware & backups: Keep firmware up to date by applying official releases only via Trezor Suite. Do not enter your recovery seed into any digital device — it must remain offline to prevent theft.

Connect to wallets and apps

Use Trezor with trusted, well-reviewed wallets and services. Common integrations include desktop Trezor Suite, Electrum, MetaMask (hardware integration), and a growing list of audited Web3 DApps and NFT marketplaces. Always confirm the site URL and check for HTTPS.

Top 5 security best practices

  1. Always verify device firmware and package integrity before first use.
  2. Never type or photograph your recovery seed; keep it offline and duplicated in secure locations.
  3. Use a strong PIN and enable passphrase features only if you understand their implications.
  4. Update firmware only from official sources and verify release signatures.
  5. Approve all transactions on the device screen and review recipient addresses carefully.

FAQ & support

Q: What if I lose my device?
A: Use your recovery seed to restore funds on a new Trezor or compatible wallet. If your seed is compromised, move funds immediately to a new seed-derived wallet.
Q: How do I report a problem?
A: Contact official support via the verified support portal. Do not share your recovery seed, PIN, or private keys with anyone claiming to help.
